OTTAWA — The first day of winter Saturday brought ice and snow to east-central Kansas and proved to be challenging for drivers. Franklin County Sheriff Jeff Richards said his office received more than 100 calls for injury and non-injury accidents and slide-offs, mostly along I-35, all in a short period of time Saturday morning. The interstate was closed along several sections while deputies cleared accidents, Richards said.
