OTTAWA — Ottawa police took an 11-year-old Ottawa boy in into protective custody Tuesday afternoon after he was rescued from the ice in the Marais des Cygnes River at the Second Street dam. Police were called to the river at the dam in the 1200 block of West Second Street after someone spotted the boy trying to cross the weir across the river. The boy ignored officers’ orders not to try to cross the river. The boy went out onto the ice, Capt. Adam Weingartner said. The Ottawa Fire Department water rescue team went out onto the ice and retrieved the boy before he fell into the water, Weingartner said.
