OTTAWA — The annual Walk Kansas begins March 16. The eight-week exercise and health program encourages six-member teams to walk the equivalent of the distance across the state, or 423 miles, said Diane Burnett, Miami County family and consumer sciences agent. Those taking part need not walk outside, she said. The program is based on walking and other types of moderate or vigorous activity, and encourages each of six team members to log 150 minutes of activity per week, she said. That translates into 30 minutes of moderate physical activity per team member five or more days a week, she said. For more ambitious groups, they can try the equivalent of walking across the state and back, or walking around the perimeter of the state, or 1,200 miles, Rebecca McFarland, Frontier Extension District family and consumer sciences agent, said. McFarland said enrollment forms and information will be available by the end of the week at the Ottawa and Lyndon offices.
