LAWRENCE — Cult filmaker John Waters will talk about one of his heroes, William S. Burroughs, when he brings his “This Filthy World” monologue to the Lawrence Arts Center on Thursday evening. Waters’ lecture is sold out. The appearance is part of a series held in Lawrence honoring Burroughs’ 100th birthday. The Lawrence Journal-World notes that Burroughs, one of the most prominent of the beat-generation writers, once called Waters the “pope of trash.” Waters told the Journal-World that Burroughs’ comment was one of the best accolades he’s received. It was a reference to Waters’ trashy, surreal cult films such as “Pink Flamingos,” “Hairspray” and “Cry Baby.” Burroughs was one of the most influential beat writers and is best known for the novel “Naked Lunch.” He moved to Lawrence in 1981 and lived there the rest of his life.
