LAWRENCE — The Kansas Geological Survey at Kansas University has just published the state’s first atlas of Kansas lakes. The new atlas provides information on nearly 80 of the state’s reservoirs and a broad overview of their condition. Biological survey director Ed Martinko said the survey has been measuring and studying the lakes for more than a decade. The survey has mapped the bottom of many reservoirs, tested water and tracked land use around the lakes. Most Kansas lakes were constructed after the Dust Bowl era to meet the demands of expanding agriculture and a growing population. The Geological Survey said some of the state’s oldest reservoirs are nearly half-filled with sediment. The 240-page book is $25 and is available by e-mail or mail from the Kansas Geological Survey offices in Lawrence or Wichita.
