TOPEKA — State Sen. Pat Apple, R-Louisburg, has been named to the Kansas Corporation Commission by Gov. Sam Brownback. Apple said he will resign his senate seat once he’s confirmed approximately April 4. Republican precinct officials will elect someone to fill the 37th Senate District seat for the rest of the year. State law requires that a legislative seat vacated before May 1st must stand for election, Apple said. A primary election in August and general election in November will be held to select the person to fill the remaining two years of the senate term. Apple was elected to the Kansas Senate in 2005 and his district originally included Franklin, Miami and most of Anderson counties. After redistricting, his district covered eastern Miami and southern Johnson counties. An electrical contractor, Apple has been chair of the Senate Utilities Committee since 2009. He succeeds Tom Wright to the KCC, which regulates most utilities, transportation and energy companies in the state.
