TOPEKA — The Kansas Department of Agriculture and the U.S. Department of Agriculture plans to set nearly 600 traps in seven counties to detect emerald ash borer. Among the seven counties, traps have been set in Osage and Douglas counties. The tree pest has been found in Wyandotte and Johnson counties, and those counties have been quarantined. KDA’s Laurinda Ramonda said they hope the traps will find emerald ash borer early enough to respond. The purple, prism-shaped traps pose no risk to humans, pets or wildlife, she said. The emerald ash borer is extremely dangerous for ash trees. Since it was accidentally introduced to the U.S. near Detroit 12 years ago, it has killed millions of ash trees.
