PAOLA — After more than a year of chemotherapy treatments, MRIs, surgery, and bad news, Anna Powers, 10, Paola; and her family finally have reason for hope. The Miami County Republic reports that Anna was diagnosed with a type of brain cancer in 2012. Her relatives told the paper that they felt helpless as they watched the cancer and chemotherapy treatments weaken her, so they turned to their faith in God. They said their prayers were answered. A clinical study at Children’s Mercy Hospital in Kansas City changed its treatment criteria to include Anna’s type of brain tumor. Since she started the experimental drug treatment, the tumor had shrunk in size. People can help the family by attending a two-part fundraiser Saturday at Fire Lake Camp west of Paola. The event begins with family fun from noon to 3. Families can buy tickets for carnival games, bounce houses, mother’s day craft tables and more. That event is free. The evening dinner and silent auction takes place from 6 to 9 p.m., and tickets are $25 per person. Reservations can be made by calling Tricia Sinclair at (913) 908-3969 or registering on-line at www.eventbrite.com.
