TOPEKA — Topeka city council member John Campos, Jr,. was arrested Monday and charged with two felonies. WIBW-TV Channel 13 reported Campos has been charged with making a false writing and interference with a law enforcement officer. WIBW said the charges stem from a traffic stop in which Campos was ticketed for speeding and driving without car insurance. Shawnee County court records say Campos went to the city’s legal department on April 3 and asked that the citation for driving with no car insurance be dismissed, and showed a proof-of-insurance card to employees. However, court records say he had altered the card to show that he had bought insurance before he was pulled over. When a Shawnee County detective questioned him later, Campos told him he had destroyed and threw away the insurance card. WIBW reported Campos said he was shocked by the charges but wouldn’t comment. Shawnee County District Attorney Chad Taylor has also filed an ouster petition against Campos.
