OTTAWA — Graduation exercises took place at Ottawa High School on Mother’s Day Sunday afternoon. Ceremonies were held in a completely full Steve Grogan Stadium with a mix of sunshine and clouds, and a persistent south wind. One of the commencement speakers, Gabbie Bowers, said she loves public speaking, so she wasn’t nervous, but giving a speech while holding her mortar board, her hair and her notes in the strong wind was a bit much. “I thought I was going to blow away half the time,” she said. Bowers is going to K-State, where she will study actuarial mathematics. The other commencement speaker, class president Frankie Hernandez, confessed that he was nervous, even though he has experience in addressing large groups. “It’s more nerve-wracking talking in front of people that you know,” said Hernandez, who will enroll at KU this fall, and major in public administration.
