WILLIAMSBURG – Authorities have released the name of the driver that was killed in a one-car crash just south of I-35 near Williamsburg. 48-year-old Michael Robert Mcauliffe of Iowa died at the scene after the car he was driving crashed and eventually caught fire. Authorities say the car got stuck in a tree and barbed wire fence and the driver made several attempts to free the vehicle, rocking it back-and-forth. A Homeland Security Officer made repeated requests to the driver to get out, and even tried to open the door, but it was locked. The officer fired two shots at the window, but it failed to shatter. A truck driver was also unsuccessful at putting out the fire. The mishap remains under investigation.
