BALDWIN CITY — Douglas County commissioners have issued conditional use permits to a commercial wind company to erect two meteorological towers west of Baldwin City to measure the area’s wind patterns. The Lawrence Journal-World reports Nextera Energy Resources, the Florida-based company that is the largest wind producer in the U.S. is studying whether a commercial wind farm in southwest Douglas County is feasible. The two towers are each 200 feet tall. The permits last six years. The paper says the towers will go up in two separate properties that are north of U.S. 56 and west of U.S. 59. However, County Commissioner Jim Flory, whose district covers the towers and who voted for the permits, said nearby residents may not welcome a wind farm in the future.
