LAWRENCE — The Douglas County Sheriff’s office has closed the south-bound lanes of U.S. 59 just south of Lawrence. Investigators are combing a three-mile stretch of U.S. 59 between N 1000 Road and the N 650 exit for several hours to investigate a shooting that occurred late Monday night, Sheriff’s Lt. Steve Lewis said. A 24-year-old Lawrence man was shot while he was driving on U.S. 59 south of Lawrence, Lewis said. The man was taken by helicopter to Stormont Vail Hospital in Topeka where he is recuperating from gunshot wounds, he said. Lewis said investigators have no information about any suspects or vehicle involved in the shooting. The Kansas Department of Transportation said traffic will be detoured onto Old Highway 59 at N 1000 Road and routed back onto the new highway at N 650 Road. KDOT will announce when the highway is reopened, which would be approximately this evening at 6.
