WaKEENEY — Two Ottawans were killed and another injured in a head-on crash on I-70 in western Kansas Monday afternoon. The Kansas Highway Patrol said John Louis Smith, 17, Ottawa, was driving east on I-70 about one mile east of the Ogallah exit when he lost control of his car. His car crossed the median and went into the west-bound lanes and hit a semi-truck driven by Dennis Bowers, 49, Cardington, Ohio; and then hit a car driven by Kevin Werner, 54, Derby, the highway patrol said. The two cars came to rest in the median and the truck came to rest in the south ditch. Smith and a passenger in his car, Alexis Woolsoncroft, 12, Ottawa; were killed. Another passenger in his car, Alejandra Gutierrez-Pino, 17, Ottawa: was taken to Hays Medical Center. Bowers was injured and taken to Lemke Memorial Hospital in WaKeeney, but was later transferred to Hays Medical Center. Werner was taken to Lemke Memorial Hospital. They were all wearing seat belts.
