OTTAWA — Lake Region RC&D and the Kansas Rural Center, Whiting, will host a public meeting on setting up a meat food hub in eastern Kansas 1-4 p.m. Tuesday at the Franklin County Annex, 1416 S. Main St. The proposal is based on a proposal to create a food hub in Douglas County, and Eileen Horn, Douglas County sustainability coordinator, will be one of the speakers, said Lake Region president Don Stottlemire. There are several small meat markets and individual processors in the area and the meeting will look at ways to make it easier for them to connect with larger area food distributors and regional supermarket chains or institutional buyers, Stottlemire said. Topics will include marketing opportunities for meats, business planning and potential funding sources. Light refreshments will be available.
