TOPEKA — The Kansas Historical Society at Topeka will host two exhibits to commemorate Hispanic Heritage Month, which goes from Sept. 15 to Oct. 1. One exhibit is called “Día de los Muertos” or the Day of the Dead. The Day of the Dead is a traditional three-day Mexican holiday at Halloween with roots that go back to the Aztec. The exhibit will feature Día de los Muertos objects made in Topeka and Mexico, adorned with the traditional Aztec symbols of skeletons and skulls. The second exhibit is called “Continuing the Tradition: Mexican American Folk Arts.” The exhibits highlights several forms of traditional folk art that Mexican immigrants brought to Kansas, including crocheted flowers and textile handiwork. The exhibit also features biographies of the folk artists. The exhibits will be on display Sept. 20 through Nov. 3.
