TOPEKA — Westar Energy has warned customers of a scam in which someone claims to be a bill collector for the utility. Westar said it has received reports that the fake callers are using technology to manipulate caller IDs so the fake collection calls appear to be from Westar. Westar said it has also received reports that an impostor is entering businesses and claiming to be from Westar. The imposter tells the business that the power will be cut off unless the business owner makes an immediate payment by prepaid credit card. Westar said customers should stop, go on-line or check their bills. Those who are approached by someone who claims to be from Westar should ask to see an employee ID. Westar said its employees will readily show their employee badges. Also, give Westar a call at 800-383-1183 and ask if the utility has sent an employee.
