TOPEKA — The Kansas Department of Transportation is looking for sites to build rail transloading facilities. KDOT said it expects an announcement of facility locations will be made within a year. KDOT will hire a consultant to help select the most best locations for facilities, how big they should be, how many should be built and how such a facility should be operated. Transloading is the process of moving freight containers between trucks and rail cars. Transloading can help customers who may not have local access to freight rail service or those who need expanded warehousing, KDOT said. The need for transloading facilities was identified by the state’s freight advisory committee earlier this year, KDOT secretary Mike King said.
