NEW YORK CITY — Dollar General may have to close or sell more than 4,000 stores to win approval from the Federal Trade Commission for its hostile takeover of Family Dollar stores. Originally, Dollar General had agreed to sell up to 1,500 stores as part of its $9.1 billion cash offer to buy the other discount retailer. However, the New York Post reports that the company could be forced either to raise its purchase price again or to cut loose more than double the number of stores they had planned. Family Dollar, whose board has been trying to fend off the buyout, said regulators have expressed concerns that the Dollar General buyout would violate anti-trust rules. Dollar General staged its hostile takeover try after Dollar Tree, another discount retail chain, previously offered to buy Family Dollar for $8.5 billion in cash and stock. All three discount retailers have stores in Franklin, Anderson, Miami, Osage and Linn counties.
