OTTAWA — Ottawa University and the Ottawa Public Library launched a nine-week tutoring program beginning today to provide free tutoring services for the community’s English language learners. The tutoring sessions will be held at the Ottawa Library, with OU education students serving as tutors. Tutoring sessions will be available Monday through Friday at times, based on the schedules of the students and volunteers. The program is designed to help students learn English to help them navigate most every-day situations. OU education professor Nilufer Guler said the future teachers will all experience having students with limited English skills in their classes. Guler said the program will help the OU students learn how to better help those students. Shannon Leonard says the library was surprised to find out that there is a tremendous need for such a class. If the pilot tutoring program proves to be a success, Guler and Leonard said they’ll consider expanding it. To learn available times and to sign up for the tutoring sessions, stop by the Ottawa Library or call 242-3080. The program will be based on the student’s language level.
