TOPEKA — The annual severe weather safety and storm spotter training offered by the National Weather Service kicks off at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Community Building in the North Lake Park in Garnett.  Other sessions in the area include Feb. 24 at the Louisburg Middle School auditorium; March 9 at Celebration Hall in Ottawa, March 12 at the Overbrook Pub, and March 18 at the Lawrence Arts Center. All sessions are free and open to the public and begin at 7 p.m. and will last approximately an hour. The program will focus on severe storm safety, preparedness, and awareness. Weather service officials will talk about important cloud features associated with supercell and squall line thunderstorms. The presentation can also be used as a refresher training course by storm spotters.
