PLEASANTON — Two men were killed when their kit-built airplane crashed northwest of Pleasanton Tuesday afternoon. Herbert Siegel, 67, Stilwell; and Brian Decker, 55, Independence, Mo., took off from a private grass air strip two miles northwest of Pleasanton heading north and were approximately 50 feet in the air when their plane drifted to the west, striking the tops of trees, the Kansas Highway Patrol said. The plane crashed into a wooded area. The highway patrol described the aircraft as a light sport plane called a Zodiac. The planes were sold as kits by Zenith Aircraft Company, Mexico, Mo. The cause of the crash is being investigated by the highway patrol and the National Transportation Safety Board.
