HILLSDALE LAKE — The discovery of a car submerged at Hillsdale Lake and a body inside it solves a 23-year-old missing persons case. While fishing, an angler using underwater sonar located the submerged car north of the Jayhawker Boat Ramp approximately 40 yards out into the lake, Miami County Undersheriff Wayne Minckley said. Miami County deputies, park rangers, and members of the Osawatomie Fire Department water rescue team pulled a 1981 Chevrolet Ditation from the water Thursday evening, Minckley said. They found a body in the driver’s seat inside the car, he said. The car was registered to Fremont O’Berg, Jr., rural Paola. An autopsy confirms the body is of the 57-year-old O’Berg, Minckley said. O’Berg vanished without a trace and was reported missing on Jan. 6, 1992. After he disappeared, searches were conducted around Miami County, which including Hillsdale Lake. His family has now been notified. Minckley said the case is still under investigation.
