BALDWIN CITY — A 48-year-old Baldwin City woman was in critical condition as a result of a two-vehicle accident on U.S. 59 south of Lawrence Monday morning. Margaret Wessling was driving north on U.S. 59 when Tommy Kay, 71, Lawrence, who was driving east on North 1100 Road, crossed the highway and struck her car. Both vehicles landed in the east ditch of the north-bound lane of U.S. 59, closing the road for much of the morning. She had to be cut out of her car. Wessling was taken by helicopter to Kansas University Hospital. The sheriff’s office said the woman received life-threatening injuries. Kay wasn’t injured. Both drivers were wearing seat belts.
