GARNETT — The Kansas Dept. of Health and Environment said tests have confirmed that algae found in Crystal Lake in Garnett is cyanobacteria, or blue-green algae. The KDHE issued a warning about the dangerous blue-green algae, saying that contact with the water can be harmful to humans and deadly to pets. The lake is in the Veterans Memorial Park on the south edge of Garnett. City officials said that the park will remain open. It is safe to eat fish caught from the lake as long as the fish is rinsed with clean water; and only the fillet is eaten, the KDHE said. The lake is one of eight across the state under blue-green algae warnings. The other in the area is the Melvern Lake Outlet Pond in Osage County.
