OTTAWA — Ottawa Fire Chief Jeff Carner will retire next month after nearly 33 years of service.  Carner began his career with the city on Aug. 1, 1983.  “During my service, I have held every position within the department until I was named chief in 1999,” Carner said.  “I’m very proud of this department.  We have a group of dedicated, professional people who are committed to what they do and seeing their level of commitment and being a part of that has truly been an honor.”  City Manager Richard Nienstedt lauded Carner, saying he has been instrumental in building a strong team, cultivating good community relationships and has ensured the department is in a strong position for the future of addressing Ottawa’s growth needs.  Carner’s last day is scheduled for March 18.  His position will be offered to other members of the Ottawa department and likely be filled before Carner’s departure.
