OTTAWA — Beginning today and running through March 13, Ottawa police will join other law enforcement agencies in Kansas, Missouri and Oklahoma to watch that teen drivers are using their seat belts. Last year, 13 teens were killed in car crashes in Kansas, Chief Dennis Butler said. Forty percent of those teens weren’t properly restrained, he said. “Even one teen death is unacceptable,” Butler said. “Please slow down, put the phone away or turn it off, and always buckle up.” Officers will step up their patrols around schools, ticketing drivers who are not buckled up or who are committing other traffic violations.
