OTTAWA – The Kansas Bureau of Investigation continues to investigate the deal of inmate Benjamin Mastel, 35, Ottawa, who was found dead in the Franklin County jail Friday night by jail staff during a security check. Staffer initiated emergency first aid, through the use of CPR and an AED. Mastel was transported by ambulance to Ransom Memorial Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. Franklin County Sheriff Jeff Richards said his department is cooperating fully with the KBI investigation. Mastel had been in custody since April 19th in connection with a stabbing.
