TOPEKA — In a ruling issued Friday afternoon, the Kansas Supreme Court has agreed to fast-track a hearing on whether a new school finance law meets the judges’ order to make school funding more fair among richer and poor districts.  Previously, as part of the Gannon school finance lawsuit, the court has said that all schools would close July 1 if legislators didn’t do so.  The new law, called Senate Substitute for House Bill 2655, was passed by the legislature and signed Thursday by Gov. Sam Brownback.  The law doesn’t add more money for schools but instead, shuffles around state aid among the school districts.  The new hearing has been set for May 10 in Topeka.  The order also says that the order closing schools July 1 remains in force.
