TOPEKA — The Kansas Legislature adjourned the session at 3:30 a.m. this morning by passing a budget. The House approved it and sent it to the senate which also OK’d the budget. However, the new budget doesn’t even pretend to cover the state’s expenses or even deal with the state financial crisis. Instead, the legislature passed the budget hole back to Gov. Sam Brownback and basically said “It’s your problem.” To meet the constitutional requirement of finishing the general fund above zero, Brownback will have to impose at least 3 percent across-the-board cuts – although the legislators “held harmless” funding for K-12 education – as well make additional raids on the Kansas Dept. of Transportation’s fund, Kansas News Network reported. The legislature’s final adjournment has been set for June 1.
