MELVERN — A man was stabbed early Monday morning after trying to break into a home in rural Melvern, the Osage County Sheriff Laurie Dunn said. Around 3:30 a.m., a 911 caller reported a break-in at 4500 block of East 309th Street north of Melvern, Dunn said. The caller reported that the intruder had been stabbed and had fled. Jason Steele, 35, Kansas City, Kan., in the area a short time later, she said. He was taken to Stormont Vail Hospital, Topeka, for treatment of stab injuries. One of the homeowners was also taken to Stormont Vail Hospital. Another homeowner received minor injuries but declined medical treatment. Steele has been booked into the Osage County jail on suspicion of aggravated burglary and aggravated battery, Dunn said.
