OVERLAND PARK – Monday night’s massive fire that destroyed two apartment complexes under construction and damaged 22 nearby houses in Overland Park was an accident. Sparks from a welding torch operated by welder working for a subcontractor in the Royale Apartments in the CityPlace development, near U.S. 69 in southern Overland Park, landed on wood building materials, fire investigators said during a news conference Tuesday. The combination of high winds and dry conditions resulted in a raging conflagration. Three firefighters received what was described as minor injuries.
