OTTAWA — A proposal for the Downtown River Plaza picked up the blessing from Ottawa City commissioners Wednesday. The blessing also includes $10,000 and some land. The project, headed up by the group Onward Ottawa, would include a market pavilion near the intersection of the Prairie Spirit and Flint Hills trails at First and Walnut, as well as a space for public events and entertainment, said John Coen, Ottawa Area Chamber of Commerce president and member of Onward Ottawa, which a quasi-public group. The plaza, which is one key suggestion made by the public in a series of public hearings, is designed to spark renewed vitality in downtown Ottawa while highlighting the trails, he said. The group will be raising funds for the proposal. Commissioners lauded the proposal. Other Onward Ottawa projects include making Main Street in downtown more pedestrian friendly and revitalize Memorial Auditorium.
