OTTAWA — Medical scolds will lecture that too much weight is a health hazard.
Franklin County EMS director Nick Robbins will say it’s a health hazard for his ambulance crews, too. He told county commissioners Wednesday that EMS workers are getting injured by lifting heavier patients, politely called bariatric patients. Crews are seeing more of the heavier patients as time goes on, he said. He asked to buy a special air-powered lifting and moving system for heavier patients. The system will also help to handle patients with artificial joints, who often have to be lifted and handled differently than other patients, he said. Commissioners agreed to pay slightly more than $26,000 to buy the system.
