WELDA — A 19-year-old Independence, Kan., man was killed late Friday night when an out-of-control semi-truck smashed into his small SUV south of Welda. Thomas Nguyen, 42, Houston; was driving a semi-truck north on U.S. 169 two miles south of Welda when his truck went off the road and into the grass. The truck hit a concrete culvert and a milepost sign, the Kansas Highway Patrol said. He over-corrected and when the truck came back onto the road, it hit a south-bound 2002 Chevy Tracker driven by Andrew Metcalf of Independence, the highway patrol said. Both vehicles ended up in the west ditch, with the truck blocking both lanes of traffic. Nguyen and a passenger wasn’t injured. It wasn’t immediately known if Metcalf was wearing a seatbelt.
