A 15-year-old boy is recovering at Children’s Mercy Hospital after being injured in the Franklin County Juvenile Detention Center.  Austin Barela was life flighted to Children’s Mercy Hospital and had emergency brain surgery on Monday to relieve pressure on his brain.  According to KCTV-5, Barella was body slammed to the ground by guards inside the facility and left crumpled on the floor for several hours, despite asking for an ambulance.  His mother, Jennifer Davis says Austin said he was laying on the floor until the next shift when another guard noticed him and called for help.

Barella had a three-inch skull fracture, along with cuts and bruises.  He said he remained conscious most of the time,remembers what happened, and who did it.   According to KCTV-5, officials at the Franklin County Juvenile Detention Center are cooperating with the investigation and a guard has been placed on leave.
