Have you ever wondered about who lives in your city? Are they criminals or sex offenders? With a report coming out in Missouri about the state losing track of over 100 registered sex offenders, people in Kansas are wondering about offenders in Kansas. Kansas does require that those convicted of sex crimes register with the sheriff’s office in the county that they reside. According to the Anderson County Review, Anderson County has 24 offenders on their registry, 13 in Garnett, five in Kincaid, two in Colony and Welda, and one in Greely.
Sheriff Vern Valentine says that the system works better in Kansas, but it still depends on the department. He adds that the state sends a list of people supposed to be in the county, and if they are not registered then the department tracks them down. Offenders have to register not only in the county in which they live but also in the county that they work if they have to commute. Valentine says the same is true when a person is released from prison.
Franklin County has 72 registered offenders, Allan County has 51, Miami County 92, Coffee County 27, and Linn County 34. Valentine says a person can track where registered offenders live in their county by searching online at kbi.ks.gov/registeredoffender.
