Democrat Laura Kelly was inaugurated as Kansas’s 48th Governor shortly before noon yesterday. In her inaugural speech, Kelly called for an end to the partisan divisions in the statehouse. Kelly, known for working across the aisle, called on officials from both parties to put the needs of Kansans ahead of politics.
The conservative Republicans that control the legislature says they are willing to work with Kelly but are determined to hold the line on spending. Kelly’s first budget is expected to include an increase in public school funding and money to expand medicaid coverage to more low income and disabled Kansans.
