New York may be a big deal… But Kansas is also a big deal. That at least was the case with the formation of Chautaqua clubs in the late 1800’s. Sarah Bell is a doctoral candidate at the University of Kansas and she was the featured speaker at the annual meeting of the Franklin County historical society. She says the Ottawa Kansas Chautauqua was prominent.
Bell says Chautauqua clubs were instrumental in pushing for women’s right to vote.
