It is severe weather awareness week in Kansas and one thing a lot of people don’t think about is lightning. Lightning strikes the United States 25 million times a year, nearly 47 times a minute killing 47 people each year. Many of these deaths occur outdoors and are preventable. National Weather Service Meteorologist John Woynick says it can strike even if the storm is not to the area yet.
Each bolt of ligthning is hotter than the sun and can reach 50 thousand degrees. A good rule of thumb to remember is: When thunder roars, go indoors.
