Scam alert! The city of Ottawa has been made aware of a scam involving a phone call that appears to come from the city’s utility billing number. The caller says, “You are delinquent in your utility bill and you must pay immediately to avoid being shut off. They say, “A truck is on its way to your house to shut off utilities.” The city would like you to know they do not make phone calls to collect overdue or late payments. If you receive such a call, simply hang up and report it to the police. Do not give out any personal information like credit card numbers or bank account information. If you think you may have been affected by this, call your credit card company or bank to check. The city of Ottawa will only notify you via mail if there is going to be an interruption in your utility services.
