APPANOOSE — A new wind turbine at Appanoose Elementary School could be a sign of Franklin County’s future, said county commissioner Ed Taylor. Although it’s unlikely that there will be commercial wind farms in the county, there will likely be more individual wind generators going up, he said. The county has rewritten planning and zoning rules that will make it easier for individuals to install the generators and towers. Taylor will join other local officials in a ribbon-cutting for the school’s wind turbine this afternoon at 1. The turbine, the newest project in the Kansas Wind for Schools program, was financed through grants and donations from KCP&L, the state of Kansas, Kansas State University, Performance Electric of Ottawa, and The Energy
Savings Store. The turbine will generate power for the school but will also be part of interactive science classes involving renewable energy.
