MANHATTAN — Too much rain is not a good thing. K-State Research and Extension’s Ward Upham said too much rain can damage your garden. A hard rain can hammer the soil and leave the top with a thick crust that can keep oxygen and moisture from sinking into the roots, so gardeners should lightly break up the crust, he said. If water stands in a garden for more than 24 hours, it can damage roots, Upham said. The standing water can also act as a mirror that reflects too much sun onto tender plants, he said. If there is too much standing water you may have to cut a drainage channel, he said.
