LAWRENCE — If you drive to Lawrence for the Memorial Day holiday, make sure you don’t get belted for not wearing a seat belt. The Douglas County Sheriff’s Department said deputies will make a point of watching for motorists not wearing seatbelts. The department is taking part in a two-week enforcement campaign going on now through June 6 called “Click it or Ticket.” There’s a new state law that gives traffic officers more authority to write tickets for not wearing seat belts. Before the new law, officers couldn’t pull over drivers for seat belts unless they committed another traffic violation. Under the new law, they can now pull over those drivers not wearing seat belts.
