TOPEKA — Three area agencies have received mini-grants for youth services from Kansas Mentors. Kansas State football coach Bill Snyder, co-chair of Kansas Mentors, said funding for youth mentoring programs has sharply declined at a time when the programs are needed more. The Elizabeth Layton Center received $1,500. ECKAN of Franklin, Osage and Coffey counties received $1,500. Big Brothers Big Sisters of Miami County received $1,037. Grant funds will allow recipients to try a variety of recruitment and retention strategies over the next six months to engage more Kansans as volunteer mentors. Recipients were selected based on their ability to leverage local resources as match funds and collaborate with community partners. Kansas Mentors has awarded more than $510,000 to statewide and is partnered with more than 175 mentoring programs in 86 counties.
