MANHATTAN — Those heavy rains may have given your vegetable garden lots of water. But K-State Extension horticulturalist Ward Upham said the heavy rains may have taken food from your garden. The rains may have washed away pre-plant fertilizers from vegetable roots, he said. You may have to load up on more nitrogen fertilizer for your vegetables. In a pinch, you can use lawn fertilizer as long as it has a heavy dose of nitrogen – that’s the first of the three numbers on the bag, he said.
