Franklin County is in the midst of a disease outbreak that a lot of people don’t like to talk about, sexually transmitted diseases. The county has seen a huge jump in these disease in the last five years. Gonorrhea is a big problem with a 60% increase over that time. However, another major concern is congenital syphilis. Franklin County Health Director Midge Ransom says it can and needs to be treated.

Kansas has seen cases of congenital syphilis triple in the last five years and ranks 15th in the nation for cases of congenital syphilis. Health officials say that having multiple partners is a big problem and that using condoms can prevent most sexually transmitted diseases.
