MANHATTAN — If you’re the superstitious sort or you’re afraid of tornadoes, maybe you should stay in bed Tuesday and pull the covers over your head. State climatologist Mary Knapp said Tuesday, June 8, would be a good candidate for National Tornado Day for the number of tornadoes that have hit communities on that date. Among the most notable: the 1966 tornado that ripped through downtown Topeka that killed 16 and injured 406, and destroyed 820 houses and caused $100 million in damage; the worst tornado in Michigan history in 1953 when a tornado killed 115 people in North Flint; and the Oklahoma outbreak of 1974.
