OTTAWA — Ottawa school board member Dennis George has filed for the state board of education, pitting a moderate Republican who’s challenging conservative Republican incumbent John Bacon of Olathe. George, a long-time member of the Kansas Association of School Boards executive committee, said he’s had experience dealing with state-imposed school-budget cuts, federal mandates and standardized test issues. Bacon has supported adding creationism to state science standards. The conservatives lost control of the board and creationism was removed from science standards. George said he’s satisified with the present science standards that they meet the needs of Kansas students. George said he’ll make a point of meeting with as many school boards in the district rather than with a few hand-picked boards and getting a wide variety of opinions. George is CEO of the Coffey County Health Systems.
