GARNETT — Using state and federal grants, the city of Garnett has been making several improvements at what is now the Garnett Industrial Airport. The name was changed after the city received a nearly $100,000 federal Rural Development grant to develop a 40-acre industrial park at the airport. Anderson County Economic Development director Dennis Arnold said the city will extend roads, water, sewer and natural gas service into the site to make it more attractive to prospective industries. The city must have the work completed within 12 months but the city says it can meet the tight deadline, he said. The city has also picked up grants to resurface and repaint the main runway and install aircraft tie-downs. The city recently completed another grant project to improve the airport’s automated weather system.
